Piano Tuning

After an initial assessment of your piano's pitch, touch and tone, our technician will tune it to standard pitch (A440). We will then discuss any concerns on touch and tone and be able to answer any specific questions about the instrument. Pianos should be tuned once or twice a year, more if it is being used frequently (e.g., by university music students and concert pianists). Standard tuning will typically take approximately 2 hours.

PIANO SERVICING

Additional maintenance of your piano helps restore its mechanical sensitivity and tone. It involves regulation (adjusting the mechanism to ensure the keys are as responsive as possible), voicing (ensuring the hammers meet the strings for an even and beautiful tone every time) and regular tuning.

Meet our Steinway Piano Technician, Michael Ashby

MICHAEL ASHBY | Steinway Piano Technician
Highly in demand, Michael has worked with major venues and arts organisations in New Zealand, including the Wellington Town Hall, Michael Fowler Centre, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and many more. Michael is the go-to piano technician for many local and visiting pianists.

Piano technician Michael Ashby joined the Lewis Eady family in 2020. Michael's love of pianos sparked at an early age from listening to stories of pianos and pianists from his father, John Ashby. John was one of the first Steinway technicians in New Zealand having emigrated from London in 1953. John's love and dedication for his craft sparked a lifelong fascination and inspiration towards pianos for Michael. Though John passed away when Michael was 10, the memory of his joy of work has stayed with Michael.

Michael's work has taken him all over the world. He has worked with Stefan Kühnlein (concert technician and piano designer of Feurich Pianos in Gunzenhausen, Germany) and Friedeman Stein (Steinway Concert Technician in Basel, Switzerland). In 2004 and 2006, Michael worked at the piano dealership, Piano-Fischer in Munich, Germany, the agents for all grand pianos except Steinway. During this time, he led the preparation of new Fazioli, Bechstein, Grotrian and Yamaha Instruments, and tuned for the Munich Philharmonic, Gasteig, Herculesaal, and Bayerischer Staatsoper. Michael was also the Retail Manager of the Piano House in Wellington in 2007-2010.

Highly in demand, Michael has worked with major venues and arts organisations in New Zealand, including the Wellington Town Hall, Michael Fowler Centre, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and many more. Michael is the go-to piano technician for many local and visiting pianists.

Michael established Ashby Pianos in 1999. 20+ years later, he joins the Lewis Eady family as the first full-time Piano Technician.
