TUTOR SPOTLIGHT: Otis Christoffersen
Otis Christoffersen teaches guitar and bass at our partner schools and is a talented performer and songwriter with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Auckland.
Originally from Wellington and now based in Auckland, he has been playing since childhood and draws inspiration from bands like Radiohead, U2, Coldplay, and The White Stripes.
He writes and performs his own music, blending elements of dream-pop, indie pop/rock, and alternative genres. He has also played with a wide range of local artists, from intimate gigs to large shows - including opening for Georgia Lines at the Powerstation.
Over the break, we caught up with Otis to hear more about his musical inspirations and what it was like performing at the Powerstation.
LEMS: What got you into playing music?
OTIS: It was just something I always wanted to do and was the first thing I really gravitated towards. I heard a lot of U2, Coldplay and The White Stripes around the house when I was a kid and the music just made me happy. Its kind of hard to describe but I just felt really connected to the rhythms, sonic landscapes and beats that came from wherever the nearest stereo was
LEMS: What’s the biggest venue you played in?
LEMS: Who are your favourite music artists?
Otis: I was fortunate enough to play at The Powerstation last year where one of the acts I played for opened for Georgia Lines. It was a surreal experience, Kind of scary to be that high above the people on the floor below.
OTIS: Well there are the ones I mentioned earlier. U2, Coldplay, The White Stripes. But since I’ve gotten older that list has broaden a lot to include the likes of Radiohead, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Talking Heads, Stereophonics etc.
LEMS: How would you describe your teaching style?
OTIS: I would describe it as fun, interactive and enjoyable. I like to bring the excitement and joy music gave me when I was a kid into each of my lessons.
LEMS: WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT TEACHING AT LEWIS EADY MUSIC SCHOOL?
LEMS: WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
OTIS: I’m usually writing my own songs, playing on other peoples song or walking my dog usually.
OTIS: I would like to be writing, recording and producing music. It is my ultimate dream to be able to do the thing I love the most.
