TERM 3, 2018

This term and next are full of performance opportunities including our student end of year concerts.  Here’s an offering from one of my favourite poets which you may like to share with your young musician as they prepare for their performances this term –

when creating. be kind to your doubt.
hear it out. thank it for its concern.
and reassure it that you are an artist.
and risk is essential.
— Nayirrah Waheed

Here are two of our 2018 teachers.  We are very proud of our teaching team of more than 40! Each is a talented and committed musician who loves sharing their musical knowledge.  You’ll find a bio and photo of every teacher (returning faces and new faces) on the ‘Teachers’ page of our website.

Richard Linklater who joined Lewis Eady in 2006 teaches drum kit at Lewis Eady Music School (Great South Road, Epsom), Pasadena and Kowhai Intermediate Schools, Freemans Bay, Westmere and Ponsonby Primary Schools.  Richard has over 45 years experience drumming at a professional level in many different genres of music including jazz and world-fusion, rock/pop, blues and R'n B, Ska/reggae, country, and on a range of instruments including Latin/Brazilian percussion, West African dununs, Cook Island log drums (pate) and hand drums (bongos, doumbek). Over the years, Richard has performed in many venues and at numerous events from Sweetwaters in 1981, the Taupo Arts Festival and the Percussive Arts Festival at Victoria University in 1998 and Womad in 1999.  Richard now plays regularly at the Thirsty Dog's Auckland Blues Club, is a member of two bands 'Eli and The Blue Rocket Band' and 'Tommy' and loves passing on his skills to the younger generation.

Denny Chou who joined Lewis Eady in 2010 teaches piano at Balmoral School, Royal Oak and Ponsonby Primary Schools.  Denny has been teaching piano for more than 10 years and alongside Dom Blaazer, she heads our team of piano teachers offering sound guidance and advice as needed.  In 2008 (just a little before she joined our team) Denny was the Symphonic Band Leader at Tauranga Girls’ College. She moved to Auckland in 2009 and achieved her Bachelor of Music majoring in Piano Performance (Honours) in 2012.  Denny also holds ATCL with distinction in piano and grade 7 in flute.  She has successfully presented many students for both ABRSM and Trinity music examinations (initial through to Grade 8) with 100% pass rate.  When not teaching, Denny enjoys the odd french pastry and a good coffee!

Everything I need to know, I learned in music class

Each of our students completes a self-assessment again this term. These enable our students to identify themselves (with guidance from their tutor) what they are achieving in their weekly music class. Keep an eye out for yours!

In term 4, you will be provided with a full progress report (prepared by our tutors) and you will be invited to an end of year student concert either this term or next. Please expect your concert invitation via text message from our Music School admin team.
