In the early 1940’s Bill May, a Melbourne born jazz musician, woodwork teacher, and luthier established a custom guitar and repair business known as “Maton Stringed Instruments and Repairs”. He was so successful, that he convinced his brother to go into business with him. In 1946 “Maton Musical Instruments Company” was born.
The Maton Guitar Company caters to all levels of acoustic and electric guitar players. From beginner to intermediate, the careful handmade nature of a Maton guitar is very impressive. For the beginner, Maton offers guitars in Dreadnought, and a Bluegrass shapes, M225 and the BG808. These impressive guitars have a full wood construction, with an ‘A’ grade solid Spruce or Cedar top.
If you’re after a professional level guitar, Maton has you covered. Their Australian series offers up all Maton have learned in 50 years of guitar building. These guitars showcase Australia’s indigenous timber looking its best. Elegant Blackwood back and sides finely matched with Queensland Maple neck produce a rich, well balanced tone.
In 1958, inspired by Rock & Roll, The Maton Guitar Company produced their first electric guitar, the Mastersound 500, also today as the MS500. The guitar became a massive success and found its way into the hands of established musicians like George Harrison, The Easybeats, The Kinks, and Australia’s own, Tommy Emanuel.
Through the 60’s and 70’s the company tripled in size to keep up with demand. Musicians would come from all over the world just to get their hands on a Maton. From the MS500 to the new Anniversary Starline 4606, each Maton guitar carries with it more that 60 years of history.
Maton also offers a custom shop. As a custom shop customer you are invited to choose body shape, colour, decorative inlays, and premium tonewoods. All timbers used in Maton Custom Shop guitars are hand selected and tested for structural integrity to make sure only the best is used in the construction of your guitar. The construction of your Maton Custom Shop will be one extremely talented craftsman. This ensures that you get exactly what you want. Every guitar is built entirely by hand, they way they should be, completion only when the customer is completely satisfied. We will even help you out with airfares so you can meet the luthier who will build your guitar.
