Kawai Pianos

KAWAI PIANOS FROM LEWIS EADY

“A never ending quest for perfection”

A piano is made up of over 9000 precision parts… wood, metal, fiber, resin, and many other materials. Just assembling them into the mere form of a grand piano is, by itself, an immense undertaking. But the process of crafting them into a precision instrument capable of translating the subtle expressions of the sole into the language of music... creating an instrument that can truly 'sing'... is an art.

Lewis Eady Ltd was the first company to import Kawai Pianos into New Zealand when they were first released to the world markets in 1956.

Much like ourselves, Kawai is a traditional family owned and operated business having succeeded three generations and each generation has left its distinctive mark on the piano industry through their commitment to quality and innovation.

“At Kawai, the quest for perfection is not just an ideal… but a duty” Hirotaka Kawai

KAWAI UPRIGHT PIANOS

Not the result of mere assembly, every Kawai professional upright piano is crafted with meticulous skill and care. Kawai piano artisans begin with the finest materials and create each instrument with a harmonious blend of advanced technology and old-world craftsmanship. The result embodies the passionate quest for excellence that has characterized three generations of Kawai family leadership. Here in New Zealand, Kawai upright pianos are found in countless schools, teaching studios and private homes due to their quality, consistency and reliability.

The GE Series - drawing upon years of intelligent engineering and technical artistry, Kawai has created two superb instruments in the GE Series offering the rich, full bodied tone that one might expect from much larger grand pianos. Both instruments combine beauty, style and high performance to offer a fulfilling musical environment for your home and family.

Shigeru Kawai - Over 75 years ago, a legacy was born… as Koichi Kawai labored diligently in his small workshop in Hamamatsu, Japan. The determined spirit of the master builder lives today in the Shigeru Kawai Research and Development Laboratory, where their renowned Master Piano Artisans patiently build some of the world’s finest instruments, the Shigeru Kawai grand piano.

Combining time-tested methods of origin (the meticulous handwork techniques of the piano craft) with the most sophisticated piano design tools of our day, each Shigeru Kawai grand piano is conceived as a “next step” in the evolving art of the piano... each one striving to be better than the last. The scarcity of materials used and the painstaking attention devoted to each Shigeru Kawai grand piano make the instruments rare indeed. Fewer than 100 are crafted each year for the world market.

Millenium Action - The World’s most precise Piano ActionThe revolutionary Millenium III Upright Action represents the third evolution of piano touch. Combining modern material science with innovative new design concepts, Kawai has developed an action with a feel and consistency that is unmatched.

The key elements of the Millenium III Action:

Stronger

At the start of development, Kawai engineers focused on the need for exceptional repetition - a feature highly prized by professional pianists. To improve repetition, the action parts needed to be made lighter in weight. But there would be a side effect. Reducing weight alone could result in parts that were not as strong. Therefore the engineers reasoned that the parts must be made stronger before they could be made lighter. The infusion of carbon fiber into ABS increased the strength of the material by 90%. This enabled ABS carbon parts to stronger even though they were made lighter in weight.

Faster

With lighter ABS-Carbon parts, the Millenium III action was made faster. - approximately 16% faster than a conventional wooden action. Reduced weight enables it to respond with incredible quickness and ease. The ‘static weight’ is in line with the standard touch weight for most ‘top-quality’ pianos. But the ‘dynamic weight’ (which measures the effort required to move a key that is already in motion) is enhanced dramatically. Professional pianists have described the overall movement as “Swift, effortless and wonderfully responsive”?Greater Power
Additional power was a natural by product of adding carbon fiber to ABS material. Carbon fiber makes ABS-Carbon not only stronger but also more rigid. Because rigid parts tend to transfer energy more efficiently than parts that flex, ABS-Carbon send more energy to the hammer with every keystroke. In short the player is able to produce more power with less effort.

Better Control

The jack is the pivotal link between the key and the hammer. Its shape and design can strongly affect the way a piano ‘feels’ to a pianist. For the millennium III action the jack was redesigned with a slimmer, lighter tail that further reduces weight in the action and offers the player unparalleled control for pianissimo playing.?For those of us however that don’t have a degree in engineering the best way to fully appreciate the difference that the millennium III action makes to the piano is to experience it.

Lewis Eady cordially invite you to experience the preeminent piano action of the third millennium.
