FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - HOW IT ALL WORKS

How to arrange music lessons for yourself or your child with Lewis Eady Music School.

IF YOUR LESSONS ARE AT ONE OF OUR PARTNER SCHOOLS
Term 4 dates 25 October to 16 December 2011
(NB some schools finish on the 15th of December)

Over 1000 students have their lessons each week with us at their school during school time. Most of our partner schools have agreed that our students can be released from class to go to their music lesson on site. Your school receives several benefits by offering Lewis Eady music lessons at school including scholarships, credits for the purchase of music equipment for your school and band or orchestra tuition.

How do I enrol my child for music lessons at school?
If you would like your child to have music lessons at school, please complete an online enrolment form. Please let us know (when enrolling) if there are any times during a school day that your child cannot be scheduled for music lessons e.g. they may have a remedial lesson at a particular time each week you do not want them to miss. There is a comments box at the bottom of the enrolment form for you to advise details.

How do I know my child has been scheduled for lessons at school?
Once your child's lessons have been scheduled we will confirm the details via email.

How do I pay for the lessons?
You will be emailed an invoice for the term's lessons shortly after you have received confirmation that your child has been scheduled for lessons. Please note that your lessons must be paid for prior to commencement of your lessons or within 7 days of the date of the invoice, whichever is the sooner.  The day and time of your child's music lesson will be detailed on your invoice - we will advise you by text message should there be any change to the lesson time during the term. Your future invoices will be emailed to you approximately 10 days prior to the commencement of each new school term.

How does my child get to the lessons?
Our tutors will collect your child for their first lesson... after the first lesson you will need to remind your child to go to their lesson on their lesson day... some parents find it helpful to write a reminder on their child's hand or put a note in their lunchbox... you could also request the classroom teacher to remind your child to go to their lesson. Please note our tutors are not permitted to leave children who have already arrived for their lesson to look for a missing child who may or may not  be at school that day. Every classroom teacher, the office and your school principal receives a copy (and regular updates) of our music schedule which details  lesson times. We request the classroom teachers display the latest schedule on their classroom wall so children can check their lesson time. We do our best to keep changes to a lesson time or day to a minimum. If a change is necessary you will be advised by text message.

How long is my enrolment for?
Once your child has been scheduled for music lessons that day/time is reserved for your child until the end of the year or until you let us know in writing that you no longer require the lessons. Should you need to cancel lessons, please ensure  you email your  intention to us at musicschool@lewiseady.co.nz. Please note that there is a 4 week notice of cancellation period. If you do not advise us in writing that you are cancelling lessons you remain liable for payment of that term's fees.

Does my child need to practice?
T
o get the best value from lessons your child will require an instrument to practice on at home (unless they are enrolled for our introductory Blast-off or Musical Jam programmes) and a book to work from. Your child's tutor will advise which book  your child will be using and you will be contacted by our retail team regarding purchase of the book.

How do I find out how my child is progressing?
Mid-year self assessment certificates are completed by each student with guidance from their music tutor in Terms 2 and 3. Questions are based on the NZ Curriculum's key competencies and give students the opportunity to take responsibility for their musical progress. Self assessments provide a useful indication for parents as to how much students are enjoying their lessons and what progress they believe they are making on their instrument of choice. Your child will receive a full written report from their tutor at the last lesson in Term 4. You are welcome to observe a lesson from time to time throughout the year. If you would like to discuss your child's progress you can call us and we will give your child's tutor's contact details.

What if my child misses a lesson?
At our partner schools - If our tutor is unable to teach e.g. illness then we will provide a relieving tutor to teach that lesson. If we are not able to provide a relieving tutor you will be advised of cancellation of the lesson that day and a credit will be applied to your account for the missed lesson - please note credits will only be applied to an account where the term fees have already been paid in full. We also provide a credit if your child misses a lesson due to a school activity e.g. school camp, inter school sports etc - in this case you should email us and we will send you the appropriate form for completion by you. Unfortunately we are unable to provide replacement lessons or credits where your child is absent from school for any other reason than school activities.

At Lewis Eady Music School at 75 Gt South Road: If our tutor is unable to teach e.g. illness then we will provide a relieving tutor to teach that lesson. If we are not able to provide a relieving tutor you will be advised of cancellation of the lesson that day and a credit will be applied to your account for the missed lesson We cannot provide a credit if you miss your lesson for any other reason – if you are going to miss a lesson you are very welcome to ‘donate’ the lesson to a friend or family member – we do ask that you let us know who will be arriving for the lesson so that we can advise our tutor.

Can my child sit exams?
Yes. We encourage children to be presented for examination when they are ready.  We offer both Trinity Guildhall and ABRSM options.  Your child must have been learning for at least one whole year (4 terms) with us and must be scheduled for individual lessons the year prior to  planned examination.  Presentation for examination  is at the discretion of your child's tutor. We  arrange a 'mock exam' prior to the actual examination to assess whether your child is adequately prepared.  We will not present a child who is not considered ready to sit and pass. Your child's tutor will work closely with you to ensure a successful outcome and pleasant examination experience for your child.

Will my child have an opportunity to perform?
The majority of student concerts at our partner schools take place during the school lunchtime in term 4. This is arranged with your school and you will be advised of the details by text message the week prior to the concert. This is a chance for children who wish to, to perform for family and friends.

Please note that payment must be made prior to commencement of your lessons or within 7 days of the date of the invoice, whichever is the sooner. Your lessons are tailored to suit your requirements so we recommend that you take the time to discuss the 'desired outcome' of your music lessons with your tutor at your first lesson. Please arrive at least 5 minutes early for your lessons. Your late arrival will determine the final length of your lesson. Your lesson will finish at the scheduled time so as not to delay the next student. To get the most benefit from your music lessons you will need an instrument at home to practice on.
