SINGING RAINBOWS - PROGRAMME OUTLINE
Join us and discover the joy of making music with your child. Singing Rainbows is a music class for pre-schoolers where we help you as your child's first educator, to facilitate music and music making in your child.
Every culture has a wealth of traditional 'nursery rhymes' used largely to soothe babies to sleep and to develop language skills. We are now beginning to understand some of the science behind this ancient wisdom and the effects of music on children's brain development, fine and gross motor skills.
The Singing Rainbows programme takes elements from various musical philosophies, most notably those of Carl Orff and Shinichi Suzuki. Suzuki's philosophy is based in the belief that chldren learn best through the observations of their environment - by watching and listening to their mothers.
This is enforced by research showing not only that the benefits of early childhood musical exposure are increased significantly by 'active participation' rather than 'passive listening' but also that infants show a significant preference for songs sung by their mother or father over pre-recorded music. That is why parents or caregivers are encouraged to actively participate in a Singing Rainbows class.
The German composer Carl Orff, was a passionate educator of children who believed rhythm and a country's folk music were at the core of musical learning. Using some of the aspects of these philosophies, Singing Rainbows places a strong emphasis on participation in simple live music making (including singing, body percussion, playing simple rhythm instruments and whole body movement).
Above all, however, there is an emphasis on fun and involvement. The aim of Singing Rainbows is not to create musical prodigies but to encourage and enable parents to enhance their children's lives and development through the power of music.

SINGING RAINBOWS - THE BEST MUSICAL START
What should I do to give my pre-schooler the best musical start?
Here's what what Stuart Manins - author of the So-Me Books for children, appointed to the ISME Early Childhood Commission in 1998 advises...
Start as early as possible. Yes, if you want to be really thorough you can start before birth. There has been a lot of research now on the pre-natal musical behaviour of unborn children. But you don't have to be an academic to do what can help the developing child. Just involve yourself in musical activities like lots of singing, listening, moving and playing (of both kinds if you can) and the foetus will respond eagerly to the environment you provide.
After the baby is born the same principle keeps applying all through life. The more musical involvement is denied in early years, the more disadvantaged the baby or toddler becomes. I was involved in a research survey with Dr Roger Buckton some years ago looking at concept, emotional and motor development of music learners and the biggest single factor to emerge was this: the best, most potentially worthwhile and effective time for helping children is in early childhood.
So...just do musical things yourself and of course with your children. Don't leave it to the experts only. Use experts by all means but not as a substitute for your example. It really stands to reason. If you want your family to be interested in sport, you get involved yourself and they follow.
If you want your children to develop important social values, you demonstrate them between family members at home. If you want to know what musical things to do, go along to Singing Rainbows and see what the leaders do. This is where I took my grandchildren and I know and have faith in the people who run the programme.
